Creating Water Features in Your Garden

Add sound and beauty to your yard
Build it and they will come.
One of the most pleasant aspects of life is watching birds and small animals come to your yard. The chances of them staying longer, or even nesting and raising a family in, or close to your yard are increased exponentially if you have a water feature in it.
A water feature is usually more than a bird bath, but that would do in a smaller yard. Small animals and birds pick up on sound. To be
effective, a water feature should have enough sound coming from it to attract different species of birds.
There are a number of different pre-built options, such as; fountains, small water features with built in pumps and rigid liners for a pond that would require a pump for moving water.
Any of these will do, however, each one carries more work than the other to set up. For example, a fountain would be the easiest water feature, as it is pre-built and ready to go once you have the electricity and location all set up. Whereas a rigid pond requires more planning, digging a hole, gathering rocks among other items.
Landscapers are available for these types of tasks, or individuals such as gardeners that have the skill, vision and work ethic to create these oases for the birds.

Creating a pond from scratch is quite an undertaking, and you will need plenty of planning in advance. Among the items required are; rocks of various sizes and shapes, a soft pond liner, tools to dig and shape the pond hole, an electrician to run a certified electrical line out to the pond area from the house, a pump and filter, and possibly a power head, or fountain to give the pond ambience.

Once complete, the planning can include a variety of plants to accent the pond, both inside and out. The plants produce a number of flowers and mood, along with cover for the small animals and birds that visit your newly created, wondrous attraction. They help shade the pond as well, and this can be beneficial to keep algae down and the water cooler.
Every pond needs fish, and thankfully one of the most beautiful is available almost anywhere and can take almost any weather condition. The fish is called the Koi. It comes in many colours, including white, gold, light brown, orange and other colours. Koi can be left out year round, unless in a colder climate, where it’s recommended to bring the fish indoors over the
winter to a holding tank until the spring. The common goldfish will also do, and is quite hardy and also comes in many colours. In addition, fish eat insects, including mosquitoes and their larvae.
Once the water feature is up and running, the bird “traffic” will start to increase day after day. Every season one will take notice that often the same types of species will appear, and some will nest in your yard.
The idea is to add visual and spiritual value to your yard by attracting natures little wonders and enjoying them taking baths, drinking from the pond, raising a family and generally enjoying all that is offered by nature.
Water features have other benefits as well, such as listening to the tranquil sound of running water when you are relaxing, or being able to hear it outside your window at night when you are falling asleep in your bed.
A water feature for the yard is an idea worth looking into, and will bring joy and happiness, in the spring, summer and fall months for years to come.
