The Wizard

Uriah Heep artistic sound in motion
Uriah Heep is an under-rated band that blasted
onto the scene in the 1970’s. The band is amazingly still going today (2012) with a couple of original band members (Mick Box and Lee Kerslake). In 1973 they released one of their most popular albums called Demons and Wizards. The master Ken Hensley was writing up a storm during those days and one of his best songs was hence written; The Wizard. The lead vocalist, David Byron, has one of the sweetest voices in rock you are ever going to want to hear and he does this song righteousness while Gary Thain tickles the bass guitar strings and helps make the song a true classic.
The Wizard is a superb spiritual song with some deep messages about peace and love.
The first verse indicates that the person having this experience may be dreaming or in a meditative state-of-mind. By chance they have run into this higher being that was wandering, but we know there are no coincidences so this is a meeting that was meant to
happen. The wizard, which could be an angel or a god, told him tales and shared some wine as old friends would.
The second verse indicates that the spiritual being has a beautiful cloak made of gold and eyes of crimson fire. Whenever the spiritual being would speak, a desire would swell up inside the person in his presence. The passion would affirm to the man to aid the world and help solve the problems of mankind. This can be compared to receiving intuition from the other side without actually seeing who is delivering the message. The message is to free mankind from tyranny and deceit and the person who is hearing this message is getting it because that is their path in life, and they have a large role to play in it – as all gods’ children do.
The third verse is the key. The person is being asked to listen to the voices from inside, which are the voices within our hearts that are always there and wish to be heard. They are confirming that man and god are not so far apart in reality and metaphorically. Indeed what is meant here is all people on this earth are not only gods’ children, but have god’s co-creative powers.

The second part of the third verse has David Byron singing from the heart within, and suggesting to people they should always be happy and sing. Singing of course is a very good way to raise your vibration and be heard by the other side, and happiness is a positive state-of-mind that all people need to be in in order to become masters of their domain. Once this is achieved the people will have received the help required to activate their co-creative abilities and
thus have freed themselves from cruelty. |
The fourth and final verse has the person who encountered the magical spiritual being reminiscing about the mountain home in which the event took place. The person feels completely at ease and re-assured that they will never be alone because of the wisdom of the master during their visit together. The person speaks so fondly of their magic night with the being of light, that they have seen the millions of stars, or beings, that guide this person with their light. In other words, they have either been to, or dreamt about, or been touched by a god or an angel so powerful that they feel completely secure and trusting about the wonderful experience.
Uriah Heep is indeed a magical band and the song “The Wizard” is a melody that touches the depths of your soul and makes you really marvel of what is beyond the veil.
Lyrics for The Wizard
He was the wizard of a thousand kings,
and I chanced to meet him one night wandering.
He told me tales, and he drank my wine,
me and my magic man kinda feelin' fine.
He had a cloak of gold and eyes of fire,
and as he spoke I felt a deep desire,
to free the world from it's fear and pain,
and help the people to feel free again.
Why don't we listen to the voices in our hearts
'cause then I know we'd find that we're not so far apart.
Everybody's got to be happy. Everyone should sing,
for we know the joy of life, the peace that love can bring.
So spoke the wizard in his mountain home.
The vision of his wisdom means we'll never be alone.
And I will dream of my magic night,
And the million silver stars that guide me with their light.
