Red Squirrel

In the squirrel community, one little fellow stands out different than the rest. The red squirrel could best be compared in size to the chipmunk, but is much smaller than the black or grey squirrel. The coat is a gorgeous dark red, with a beautiful white, almost beige underbelly.
This squirrel is very feisty, and can travel from tree to tree quickly. If it’s bothered, it will give a loud sound that is unmistakable, almost like a bird. I liken the red squirrel closest to the character of the squirrel from the movie Ice Age. In the woods and forests where it frequents, it is not uncommon to have the red squirrel throw acorns or pine cones to the bottom of the tree, if you are standing below it and they have an interest there. They are very demanding about their territory, or food stash available to them, so if you get a nut in the head, know you are standing where they want to be.
This energetic squirrel loves forests with conifers in it. Red and white pines are perfect homes for this beautiful creature, which also loves forests with spruce, hemlock and cedars in them.
Of all the squirrels, this is the least tame. Black and grey squirrels can be trained to take food from your hand, or at least come very close, but the red squirrel is more cautious of humans than its bigger cousins. Be careful when feeding any squirrel, as they have a bite on them that may lead you heading to the hospital for shots. They are wild animals and thus must be respected as such.
Red squirrels will sometimes come into urban areas if there are mature trees, ravines or parks nearby. Sadly, if there are no tree tops to travel on, they travel by ground and are often hit and killed by vehicles. If you have one in your yard while living is suburbia, consider yourself lucky, but wish the best for the little guy and let them be on their way.
Red squirrels are very aggressive for their size, and will not hesitate to chase away larger squirrels if it’s warranted. They have enemies other than man, and they include; birds of prey, dogs, coyotes and weasels.
