Peace of Mind

Boston has a unique sound
The 1970’s gave the world many classic rock bands, and Boston is among them. In 1976 Boston released their self-titled album that has so many good songs; it’s tough to dig one out. However the song, “Piece of Mind” always stood out lyrically. Tom Scholz the mastermind behind the band, always gets a very unique sound out of his guitar and the lead vocalist Brad Delp compliments the band with fantastic vocals. Tom Scholz is involved in many charities and sees the world spiritually which would explain why this song has spiritual tones in it.
Piece of Mind is a timeless rock and roll classic with lyrics that go beyond the obvious.
The first verse refers to the fact that many people have a negative state-of-mind because of the dues they are forced to pay to keep food on the table in society. In other words, the structure of society does not allow a positive flow of emotions to bubble up and allow happiness because people are always forced to work. It’s indicated that as people look to the future for something better, it’s coming far too slow.
The second part of the first verse suggests that the people want to get out of this endless hum of jobs, responsibilities, and interaction within the present culture but they keep on staying because they really think they have no choice. This of course is exactly how they wish you to react so you keep the gears of “civilization” running for them. Confusion has set in because the people that do the “right thing” are simply not happy, because they have a longing to do more.
The second verse, which is also the chorus, elaborates on the confusion because the person understands why people cannot make the decisions they want to and pursue their inner desires because they have to pay the bills. However this person gets it, and does not care if they get behind or keep up with the race, because their end game is piece of mind. And they totally get the fact that competition is used to pit people against each other to attain the goals of the people really in power.

The third verse continues with the subject of competition and folks climbing the
corporate ladder to false success. They empathize with them by suggesting they hope it does not take too long, and somehow know deep down inside it’s their ego that has catapulted the people to step on each other to get to the top. |

The second part of the third verse submits there is far more to life than what their ego victories achieve. It is suggested money and materialistic wealth, along with powerful positions are to no avail when you die, that you indeed cannot take anything with you, so it really doesn’t matter what you achieve in the human illusion regarding those values.
The fourth verse, which is again the chorus, cements the fact they really see the world differently than the majority of people and wish to make a difference by always being positive and achieving the elusive piece of mind.
Before the fifth verse it is suggested to take a look ahead. This signifies that the person has a better vision of the future and is suggesting to people that the current path is not the right way and to look inside for the answers beyond the five senses by using faith.
The fifth verse is important. The person is suggesting that people love to interfere and give
advice. Advice that is from a materialistic,“I really don’t understand the world but think I do” perspective. This type of advice is most unwanted by spiritual people, because they already understand that the façade of society is not their path. Therefore they wish people to keep their opinions to themselves and just move along. It goes on to say that they (the people) appear to have convinced themselves they are certainly living an important life, and what they do is imperative because their ego has convinced them that they are significant. All the while they work for unseen powers that use and contain them as worker bees, in order to obtain their objectives and maintain the structure they have placed within society since before Christ. It also suggests that because most people have followed this path, that they come to many crossroads and cannot decide what they want to be, who they are, and what they are really doing here. That would suggest that the soul (higher self) which has been disconnected due to their arrogance is attempting to reach them.
The sixth verse goes back to the chorus once again reiterating that they do not care if they get behind in the corporate or materialistic world and simply wish to be left alone to do gods work and carry on spiritually.
As the song ends it does so trying to tell people to please take a look ahead and see the world with different eyes.
The song “Piece of Mind” is a masterpiece that attempts to communicate through spiritual under-tones that life is more than winning the game of “he who dies with the most toys wins”.
Lyrics to Piece of Mind
Now if you're feelin' kinda low 'bout the dues you've been paying
Future's coming much too slow
And you wanna run but somehow you just keep on stayin'
Can't decide on which way to go
Yeah, yeah, yeah
I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind. (yea)
Now you're climbin' to the top of the company ladder
Hope it doesn't take too long
Can't cha see there'll come a day when it won't matter
Come a day when you'll be gone
I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.
Take a look ahead, take a look ahead, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah... whoa!
Now everybody's got advice they just keep on givin'
Doesn't mean too much to me
Lot's of people out to make-believe they're livin'
Can't decide who they should be.
I understand about indecision
But I don't care if I get behind
People livin' in competition
All I want is to have my peace of mind.
Take a look ahead, take a look ahead.
Look ahead.
