Ocean City Maryland Vacation

Bring an umbrella to the beach
Ocean City, Maryland is a honey of a vacation spot along the Atlantic Ocean that is a great vacation for people of all ages. It offers many amenities, including; hotels, condominiums, fantastic beaches, a driving strip that goes right down the heart of the city, two bridges and highway from Delaware for easy access,
a bay for watercraft, deep sea fishing, crab fishing, boat tours, golf, wild ponies on Assateague Island, many restaurants to choose from, small carnivals, a superb boardwalk among other things to do.
Let's start with Location, location, location. Ocean City, Maryland is a vacation destination that is quite close to many major United States cities. Now it depends on your definition of close, but when you live in Canada anything within a day's drive is close. From major cities in the United States, here are some rough timetables to Ocean City; Boston Massachusetts is eight hours away, New York City four and a half hours away, Washington DC three hours away, Raleigh, North Carolina is six hours away, Cleveland, Ohio is nine hours away, Detroit, Michigan is twelve hours away and Cincinnati, Ohio is about twelve hours from it.
Canada's three major cities in the Eastern Time Zone are all also within a day's drive. Toronto, Ontario, Ottawa, Ontario and Montreal, Quebec are about eleven hours away.
It's worth noting that Ocean City, Maryland in not Ocean City, New Jersey, and is three hours south from that city. It's a vacation spot that I stumbled on thinking it was in New Jersey.
To get into Ocean City, Maryland there is; the coastal highway (Highway 1), highway 90 will get you into the middle of the city (62nd street) and highway 50 will bring you right downtown. Most of the streets are numbered from 1st street right to 146th street. Further north past 146th street is Delaware and Fenwick Island, which is also really part of the experience.
If you approach via the bridge in highway 90, you will get a great panoramic view of Ocean City, Maryland. What strikes me is the ambience and sheer length and size of the city. If you have never been there it's a great view using this entrance to see the large city on the sandy island.
Ocean City, Maryland is an ocean playground. There seems to be a good nightlife there as well, and can be compared to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The ambiance appears to be very similar, with large buildings overlooking the bay and the Atlantic Ocean.
If you like seafood buffets, then don't wait any longer, and book your vacation. There are some good ones to choose from, in particular the Bonfire restaurant appears to be the best. It is pricey, but it's worth the money as the food offered ranges from roast beef, to fish, to crab legs, to desserts, to really just about anything you can think of, and it's all delicious!

Both times I have gone I have taken a condominium with my family and rented through cbvacations. They have a great website that allows you to choose from a number of condos in and around Ocean City. The website is particularly helpful to find a condo exactly where you want it, on either the Atlantic Ocean, or the bay side of Ocean City. This ensures there are no surprises when you get there. And a condo is extremely affordable for a young family.

Choosing the condominium option is cheaper than the hotel option, because they come with a washer, dryer, stove, microwave and fridge and are fully equipped. So basically, you can take your family from the city in which you reside, and temporarily re-locate to Ocean City for a week or two and not have to pay for restaurant food outside every day. However, I am sure there are some hotels that offer some perks in Ocean City, but you just have to look around.
There are many grocery stores in and around Ocean City. Food Lion and Super Fresh are close by, Wal-mart isn't far, and a little store called Rick's Place is right on the strip and has a great price on wine and beer. So you can get your groceries, and other goodies all at the same time.
The main reason to vacation in Ocean City, Maryland is the beach. The beaches are very
beautiful and fairly well maintained. Their slogan is "please leave only your footprints", and
most people oblige. However there are still some people who don't either realize what they are doing, or do not care to leave the beach in the pristine shape it is meant to be in, by leaving garbage and cigarette butts where they don't belong. Nevertheless the beach is fairly clean and cleaned on a nightly basis.
The beach offers much fun, and the one most vacationers will like is it's absolutely 100%
free! That's right not one penny to get on it. If you need to park to get on the beach, that will cost some money. The majority of people vacationing there walk to the beach since the strip is so long horizontally that a walk from a bay side condo or hotel wouldn't be more than six or seven minutes. And don't forget to make some great sand castles when you are there, the sand is really good for that!
The beach is the highlight of the trip. Every day should be planned around spending time there. The waves that come in are usually a decent size and are fun to play in. Folks boogie board all day in them, and the surfers do as well, although they are asked to stop surfing the waves when the lifeguards come on duty to protect the tourists and kids on the beach.

The lifeguards overlook the beach to keep it safe for the vacationing families. I have seen them gather tourists in and explain to them the dangers of riptide currents
and watched them swim out to help people that have gone too far and start to panic. This year I even saw one swim out to obtain an object that may have caused a water hazard to people, so they are quite vigilant. The Ocean City, Maryland Life guards operate between 10:00 A.M and 5:30 P.M every day during the peak season. |

Ocean City, Maryland offers a bus system that can take you anywhere you like there. In
2012 to ride the bus was a $3.00 flat fee for the entire day. You can also rent mope heads and cool little cars (for two) to tour the strip. The boardwalk rents surreys, and bicycles are also for rent at many places.
The coastal highway, or what I refer to as the Ocean City strip has all kinds of things to see and visit, such as; candy stores, various restaurants, one Sunsation store after another, a casino, Seacrets, water slides, mini golf, fairs, among many other things. There are also some nice outlet stores as well which are located over the bay bridge on highway 50.
The boardwalk at Ocean City is long. Bring comfortable shoes, or pay a small fee for a one way ride on the tram, which is essentially a train with wheels. The ambience on the boardwalk is really nice. It's right on the beach and has many different shops, and restaurants on it. At night it's really a pleasure to walk on the boardwalk as the entire length is lit up beautifully. There is also a fair there with a large Ferris wheel, a decent roller coaster but mainly the rides cater to younger kids. One more thing about the boardwalk, don't forget to get some of their french fries! They are delicious and a large order can be shared between your family for ten dollars.
Among the many things to do at Ocean City, Maryland, regarding watercraft, is to rent jet skis, go crab fishing, go fishing, go deep sea fishing, take leisurely boat tours, or take really cool boat tours on either the OC Rocket, or the Sea Rocket. With both of the aforementioned boats you get to ride with about one hundred of your closest friends off shore a safe distance from the beach. Both boats will take you to the Delaware line and back, unless there is bad weather, and they will do their best to find some dolphins. Once they do, the boat will slowly follow them to allow the passengers to get a closer look at one of natures little wonders. The rides last about one hour and leave at different times. Both boats originate on the bay side of Ocean City not far from the boardwalk.
Make the effort to come to this ocean playground. The folks here make you feel right at home and are quite friendly. As mentioned earlier, it's really in range for millions of people to get to, and should no longer be a secret if you are looking for an ocean beach that is free, a great boardwalk, superb family fun and memories that will last a lifetime.
