Crystal Ball

A crystal ball is enchanting
When thinking about the classic rock band Styx,
images of their heyday come to mind in the mid to late 70’s. Back then, it did not seem to matter whether Dennis DeYoung or Tommy Shaw was leading the song with their vocals, the music exploded into your living room like a welcome friend re-appearing from years gone by.
Tommy Shaw wrote and sang the song Crystal Ball, and although it refers to the unseen through the title of the song, it has deeper spiritual meanings.
The first verse of Crystal Ball indicates that the person has decided to not be complacent and content any longer and thus will not walk the straight, narrow and predictable line. This is because their intuition has challenged them on a spiritual level on the type of role they currently have in society, therefore they seek to find answers to these new questions.
The second part of the first verse suggests the person has become agitated with life and wants to know why. They turn to the relaxing past time of star gazing and dream consciously questioning what they are really here for. They daydream while enjoying the stars and constellations in an effort to put together the pieces of the life puzzle. It’s also eluded they feel very alone and trapped in third dimensional time so much so it’s emphasized by being repeated twice.
The second verse has the person questioning what is really in mind for this person in the future, and expressing doubts if they are in the future plans at all. This all stems from the burning desire in many people to wake up and really wonder why they are doing what they are doing. The person believes they really need to find a crystal ball to get all the answers to the plethora of questions bouncing around in their head. In other words, they require some kind of peace of mind to settle down the frustration brought on by every day society. In essence questioning their current state of existence and convinced they can extract their true purpose.

The third verse has the conscious individual demanding to know where they are going and where they have come from. The questions are repeated because the very nature of reality has become disturbing and thus is breaking their heart because of all the physical pain and suffering seen in their world. They are confused asking for direction because they feel there is more to this world than what meets the naked eye.

The chorus reiterates the fact that the person is now reaching out with a multitude of questions and must know why they are here and what their purpose is in life.
The fourth verse of Crystal Ball is asking for direction from the higher self and wants to know where they ought to be because where they are currently is not where they want, nor should be. They are asking for guidance from their dreams, something, and anything to point the way to shed the light towards a bright future.
The song ends with the chorus another time and yet again is asking a plethora of questions about their true identity. They are no longer satisfied with the role they play in society and wish to move to a higher level of existence.
Crystal ball by Styx conveys the message that the crystal ball referred to is actually not physical in nature, but is the intuition connected to their higher self on the other side. There the person will find all the answers to their questions, thus the conversation in the lyrics is one between the higher self on the other side and the conscious mind in the physical reality.
Lyrics for Crystal Ball
I used to like to walk the straight and narrow line
I used to think that everything was fine
Sometimes I'd like to sit and gaze for days through sleepless dreams
All alone and trapped in time
All alone and trapped in time
I wonder what tomorrow has in mind for me
Or am I even in its mind at all
Perhaps I'll get a chance to look ahead and see
Soon as I find myself a crystal ball
Soon as I find myself a crystal ball
Tell me, tell me where I'm going
I don't know where I've been
Tell me, tell me, won't you tell me
And then tell me again
My heart is breaking, my body's aching
And I don't know where to go
Tell me, tell me, won't
you tell me I've just got to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I need to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I've got to know
Crystal ball
If you should see me walking
Through your dreams at night
Would you please direct me
Where I ought to be
I've been looking for a crystal ball
To shed the light
To find a future in me...
To find a future in me...
Crystal ball
There's so many things I need to know
Crystal ball
There's so many things I've got to know
Crystal ball
